On Sunday (oh my goodness 2 weeks ago now!) my friend Gavin and I took a leisurely bus up to Camden, north of London. I expected an easy going afternoon in a cool market town, a bit of shopping and a nice coffee or two. What I didn’t expect was – CULTURE SHOCK.

Camden isn’t a town with a market, it’s a group of markets which some people happen to live around. This is a market you could get lost in and not emerge from for weeks. Not half because of the sheer volume of people filling every nook and cranny of the area. All to worship at the altar of shopping……..

We wandered through Stables Market, a heady mix of everything you could ever want to buy and more. As the name suggests it once housed horses, and it’s still a warren of low curved ceilinged brick tunnels with unexpected twists and turns. I don’t think we even got through half the site and we’d been there hours, only to leave and wish we’d stayed. More people thronging the streets than at the Big Day Out!

I took my camera, but didn’t take any shots. Sorry! Here’s some of Camden Lock in action though – infinitely more interesting. The river is actually a canal – Regent’s Canal in fact.

And dad, just for you, a close up of the front of barge (you can actually see inside!).
