another reason to take river cruises…

Generally I always aim to include a touristy river cruise in every river town I visit. For example, what they say about Venice was very true for me – it’s so much more atmospherically romantic from a gondola. Somehow from the water you receive a new perspective on a city, you see it for just what it really is.

I almost didn’t bother in Frankfurt, I was having such a good time wandering the charming streets of Bornheim and the central district, recovering from trying out German beers. I was even thinking that being so similar to Melbourne in many ways, it was the sort of place I could seriously consider moving to.

Then I took the cruise…

The small central city area on the north side of the river is surrounded on both sides by docks and big industry. The coal fueled powerstation that feeds the city was only 5 minutes punt down the river. The north west side had a long row of docks and factories overlooked on the south side by a lovely treed strip of rowing clubs and boat moorings. Quite odd in all.

I still love Frankfurt though – a great town, with even greater people!
