guy – he made a real impression

When I was a kid we always were away on the boat for Guy Fawkes night. There’d be at least one other family boating with us, and when it was finally fully dark we’d get to stay up late while our dads set off the selection of fireworks brought along especially for the occasion. It was a highlight of the year, and afterwards we’d write our names in the darkness with sparklers.

Finally the government got sick of all the accidents and banned fireworks and now Australian kids wouldn’t have a clue who Guy Fawkes was.

The brits though, they take their history SERIOUSLY and consider a few people with injuries each year a small price to pay!

While technically on a Sunday this year, Guy Fawkes Night is really Fireworks Weekend, and is actually Fireworks Month. We started hearing them go off at least 2 weeks before (I at first mistook them for gunshots… Brixton, you know – not really, just joshing Mum!) and the frequency grew exponentially, culminating in 3 nights of backyard fireworks and council run displays that blanketed Clapham and Brixton in smoke till the early hours of the morning. It’s true – blanketed.

Not just an excuse for pyromaniacs to indulge either – people know what it’s all about. Some areas have bonfires too, but I didn’t see any of those, random fireworks on my travels and the official display on Clapham Common. Not a patch on Sydney New Year’s but the trees silhouetted against the light bursts was quite a beautiful sight.

The photos in this post were taken of a house 2 doors down, from my bedroom window. Must drop them a note to get better ones next year!!!!
