crazy people who sure can row…

During my recent sojourn exploring the excellent beach towns of southern New South Wales I happened across the fabled George Bass Surf Marathon. An epic event, crazy amazing people with many more muscles than I aspire to spend seven days rowing the ocean. Some entirely on their lonesome out there. I assume someone told them at some stage it only takes a moment to drown…

The second time I caught up with them was the gloomy morning of 7 January at Bermagui, the first time the weather had properly cleared up for days. My favourites from these photos are the ones showing marshals taking out a buoy almost as big as their boat (lucky both were mostly air 😉 ), and where a speedboat looks like it’s sinking (hidden behind the huge swell). Hopefully I managed to photograph most of the teams, apologies to those I missed.

I hope these images inspire you to get out and do some ocean rowing, apparently it’s addictive. Think I’ll stick with surf swimming.
