bush bridge…

Would you drive across this incredible example of outback ingenuity? Wow, what a find!

Where: Leg of Mutton at Lake Albacutya. If you can work out where that is you’ll be the only ones there – this campsite with firepit is not marked on the map.

where the lakes are dry…

North west Victoria is characterised by its dry lakes. Some fill with the rains then dehydrate to pink salt in summer. Others can wait decades for their transformation. Lake Hindmarsh last filled in 2011. Maybe that’s when the new-looking swimming and skiing signs went up at Schultzes Beach. Hard to imagine such activities at the moment though. It’s a long drive from Melbourne but worth it for the seclusion, birds, vast vistas and huge moonrises.

So many plants lost the battle against the salty soil and lack of water at Lake Hindmarsh. I appreciated the tenacity of some Australian plants though when I spotted this small patch of green making the most of inroads by its predecessor to reach down to moisture.
