a tiny, doomed miracle…

Today at the Great Ocean Road’s Johanna Beach it turned out someone’s pretty beach decoration was in fact a precious circle made by caring hearts to help protect two tiny eggs laid out in the open by a little bird that’s understandably rare, considering. After I walked away we were lucky enough to see a member of Victoria’s precarious hooded plover population hot foot it back to its ‘nest’ which was anything but that, just a small indentation in the sand. Go well courageous soul.

alternate universes…

Having thoroughly enjoyed photographing the JA Substation during last year’s Melbourne Open House weekend I was much looking forward to checking out the Russell Place Substation, despite the 1+ hour wait in the queue. A completely different experience, and largely ‘boring’ in terms of sexy tech, they saved the best for last and OH WAS IT GOOD. They still have a room where they can switch on the old DC mercury-arc rectifiers for visitors. The huge blown glass contraptions flickered and glowed with mesmerising light that surely will take us to an alternative universe, if only we could get inside…

POWER…

Thank you Melbourne Open House for allowing us to check out JA Substation at 640 Lt Bourke St. It supplies huge amounts of electricity our great city in a very low key kind of way! The only noise was from the transformer room, otherwise all was still, quiet and dusty. The massive capacitors, gleaming twists of copper and huge fat black cables snaking away were quite something to see.

On a side note, I think I’m going to bite the bullet and learn about how to get more from low light conditions senza flash. Sigh……….
